Todd Howard is an American video game designer and current director/executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios. He’s best known for the ‘Fallout’ and ‘The Elder Scrolls’ video game series. His accolades include Best Game Director by the AIAS (2012), and the Lara of Honor (2014). Todd Andrew Howard was born on April 25, 1971, in Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania. Howard attended Emmaus High School followed by the College of William & Mary. He graduated in 1993 with a double major in engineering and finance. Growing up he was fascinated by the role-playing games Wizardry (developed by Sir-Tech) and Ultima III: Exodus (developed by Richard Garriott). He also logged numerous hours playing the ice hockey sports game Wayne Gretzky Hockey (developed by Bethesda Softworks). Howard tried to score a job with the Bethesda game studio while still in college. He was rejected and told to re-apply once he graduated.
In 1994, Howard finally landed a job at Bethesda Softworks. His first video game credit was the first-person shooter The Terminator: Future Shock (1995). He then served as producer and designer for Skynet (1996). Howard provided additional design for the open-world action RPG The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996). It marked the second installment in The Elder Scrolls series. Howard served as project leader for The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (1998) and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002). He served as executive producer for The Elder Scrolls III: Bloodmoon (2003), The Elder Scrolls Travels: Shadowkey (2004), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006), The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles (2007) and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). Bethesda Softworks is currently working on The Elder Scrolls VI.
Howard served as director and executive producer of the post-apocalyptic action RPG, Fallout 3 (2008). It is the third major installment in the Fallout series. Howard executive produced Fallout Shelter (2015) for mobile devices. He returned as director for Fallout 4 (2015). The latest installment, Fallout 76 (2018), is scheduled for November 2018. It will grace the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Howard served as keynote speaker at the 2009 and 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit.
