Tobi Lou is a Nigerian-American rapper/singer out of Chicago, Illinois. As a matter of fact, he considers himself to be more than just a recording artist, but also a designer, an entrepreneur, and a trendsetter. The West African native, from the Yoruba tribe, rose to prominence after releasing his breakout single “Game Ova” (2016). Since its debut, he has solidified his status with popular tracks like “Troop” ft Smino and “Buff Baby.” On August 2, 2019, Tobi Lou unveiled his premier album, “Live On Ice.” To complement his work, he utilizes an excessive array of cartoons and animations throughout his music videos. Tobi Lou is currently affiliated with Artclub International and Empire Records.
Real name, Tobi Adeyemi, he was born on November 3, 1987, in Nigeria. At the age of 2, his family migrated to the United States and settled in Chicago, Illinois. Tobi Lou lived in the inner-city area up to the age of 5 before his family relocated to the suburbs. He grew up in a diverse neighborhood with family members who held strong educational values. Throughout high school, he was an athlete; he played baseball and had hopes of taking his talent to the professional level.
After high school, he attended various colleges including SUNY Albany in New York and FAMU in Florida to pursue a career in baseball. During an interview, he admitted that, while he was playing baseball, he was creating music on the down-low. Despite going semi-pro in 2011, Tobi Lou would stop playing baseball a year later after getting injured. Consequently, he began focusing his attention on music. When he refused to enroll back in school, he was forced to move out of his parent’s home. To develop his style and “identity,” Tobi Lou relocated to Los Angeles, California.
CAREER
“Game Ova” was one of his earliest singles to gain traction. Released in 2015, the track produced by YOG$ would become his breakout single. Two years later, he unveiled the music video. The visuals portray Tobi Lou singing over a slow RnB-type rhythm, yet harmonious with a hint of bass coupled with game-like tones. Despite its explicit lyric, the video illustrates playful and imaginative sceneries; hence, its main backdrop was a casino lounge.
From 2016 to the present, Tobi Lou continued to create his identity. He formed a business partnership with director, Glassface and made a connection with fellow producer, No I.D. Not your typical drill rapper, he produces content that’s animation-heavy and cartoon-based while delivering an out-of-this-world experience.
In March of 2018, Tobi Lou teamed up with Smino on “TROOP.” Directed by Glassface, the track became a hit raking in millions of views on YouTube. To date, it has garnered over 6.5 million plays on Spotify. That year, Tobi Lou released his hottest track yet, “Buff Baby.” “Buff Baby” arrived on April 27, 2018, on his “Tobi Lou and the Loop” EP. It was the leading track behind his new project. It immediately caught fire and, within months, witnessed millions of streams. Another Glassface production, the music video was uploaded that August under Artclub and Empire imprint. As of October 2019, the track has been streamed over 40 million times.
By the end of 2018, Tobi Lou dropped a total of 3 Eps. His accomplishments would pave the way for his newly released album, “Live on Ice.” A mega-production, the project featured 21 tracks with guest appearances from various artists. To name a few, the album featured Rockie Fresh, Vernon, Ryan Destiny, and Erica Rene. Standout tracks included “Waterboy” and “I Was Sad Last Night I’m OK Now.” The project comes courtesy of Empire and Artclub. Tobi Lou is also touring throughout the U.S, Canada, and England.
