Stephen Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and educator. He was best known for his work with black holes and relativity. He suffered from the rare neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als). Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents were Frank (d. 1986) and Isobel (d. 2013). He had three siblings, Mary, Edward and Philippa. Hawking developed a passion for the sciences and the sky at an early age. His condition started during his final year at the University of Oxford. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21 while studying cosmology at the University of Cambridge.

CAREER
Hawking earned his BS degree in natural science at Oxford University (1962). He completed ins PhD in cosmology at the University of Cambridge (1965). His 1965 thesis, Properties of expanding universes, was inspired by Roger Penrose. As an educator, he taught mathematics at Cambridge for 30 years. Hawking authored several books including, A Brief History of Time (1988), On The Shoulders of Giants (2002), and My Brief History (2013). He received numerous awards including, Adams Prize (1966), Albert Einstein Award (1978) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Parts of his life story was depicted in the biographical film, The Theory of Everything (2014). The film was directed by James Marsh and stars Eddie Redmayne.

PERSONAL
Stephen Hawking died on March 14, 2018, at the age of 76. His official cause of death was not disclosed. He passed away at his home in Cambridge, England. Hawking’s height was about 5ft 7in and he was of English and Scottish ancestry. His personal net worth was estimated at $20 million. He was married to Jane Wilde (1965-95) and later to Elaine Mason (1995-2006). He’s survived by his 3 children, Lucy, Tim and Robert, and by three grandchildren.
