Ralphie May was an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor and producer. He got his big break after placing second on season one of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. His discography includes Just Correct (2005), Girth of a Nation (2006) and Too Big to Ignore (2012). Ralph Oliver May was born on February 17, 1972 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was raised in Clarksville, Arkansas. His mom was a florist. He had three older siblings. May is a graduated of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. At age 16 he was involved in a car accident which left him in a coma for 10 days. He suffered several broken bones from the incident.
May began his stand-up career as a teenager. He grew up listening to the likes of Sam Kinison, Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. He won a radio contest at 17 which gave him the opportunity to open for Kinison. He spent a few years performing in Houston clubs before moving to Los Angeles. May was a contestant on season 1 of NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2003. He finished the competition in second place behind Vietnamese comedian Dat Phan. The exposure landed him spots on comedy shows like The Wayne Brady Show, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He was featured on the The Big Black Comedy Show alongside Mo’Nique, Vince Morris, Sexy Marie and Rodman. May worked on ESPN’s Mohr Sports starring Jay Mohr. He made multiple guest appearances on Red Eye Greg Gutfeld and Comics Unleashed.
May’s debut comedy album, Just Correct, was released in 2005. It was certified platinum. He followed up with 4 Comedy Central specials, Girth of a Nation (2006), Prime Cut (2007), Austin-tatious (2008), and Too Big To Ignore (2012). He did two comedy specials for Netflix, Unruly (2015) and Imperfectly Yours (2015). He was cast as “Otis” in the comedy film For da Love of Money (2002) starring Pierre Edwards. He voiced the character “Pnut” for the animated series Squidbillies (2013). His credits also include Spy TV, Whoopi, Cubed, and Inside Amy Schumer.
