ORIGIN Edit
Representing Regent Park, Lil Berete is an up-and-coming Canadian rapper who is bridging the gap between the Northside and the Southside with his music. Heavily drenched in street raps and charismatic melodies, his songs not only depict Canadian culture but also accentuate his Afro-Caribbean background. His music portfolio includes popular tracks like “Real,” “Northside,” “Southside,” and “Go N Get It” ft Loski. In September 2018, he released his debut mixtape “Icebreaker.” He is currently signed to New Gen, a subsidiary of XL Recordings, and belongs to the self-inspired collective “Southside to Northside.”

Real name Yaya Berete, he was born on April 3, 2001, in Regent Park, downtown Toronto, Canada. He was raised by a single mother and is the second child between two sisters. At the age of 8, he was sent to his native country, Guinea in West Africa to live with his aunt due to his bad behaviors. After spending four years in Africa, he moved back to Regent Park at age 12. His years spent in Africa were a pivotal part of his development in that he had to learn various life lessons. As a result, he became more grounded, humble, and patient.

Lil Berete’s music was influenced by artists like Akon, Young Thug, and T-Pain. However, he was first introduced to music through his mother. Named Cheka Katenen Dioubate, she was a singer back in her native country, Guinea.

CAREER
In the summer of 2017, Lil Berete made his entrance onto the rap scene by releasing singles “Turn Up,” and “Real” ft Acerrr. Prior to going live, he was encouraged by his northside companion and friend, Acerrr, who introduced him to various beats. After said tracks were aired, the southside rapper started getting noticed and began attracting a substantial amount of followers. “Real” was especially popular in that it featured a northside rapper. Due to the rivalry and division between the north and south, some interpret the track as an attempt to erase that invisible line. Within the coming months, they would be streamed millions of times and people began recognizing Lil Berete.

To further solidify his cause, Lil Berete dropped singles “Southside” and “Northside” in January and March of 2018 respectively. The tracks, drenched in street raps and smooth melodies, depict daily struggles and shine a light on a promising future. Both were well received and within a year saw over 8 million streams across various platforms. In June 2018, Lil Berete teamed up with JoEazy on “No Makeup.” Quite successful, it, too, would grace the 1 million stream milestone in the coming months.

Not slowing down, Lil Berete released his debut album “Icebreaker” that September. The 8-track mixtape featured Kenny Beats, JoEazy, and Acerrr. The project was led by popular songs “No Love” and “No Make Up.” His album is available for purchase on all major platforms. Lil Berete’s fast rise to success certainly did not go unnoticed as his buzzing music caught the attention of New Gen Records, a subdivision below UK Mega-Label XL. He would ink a contract with them and later release some of his hottest songs below their imprint. “Go N Get It,” one of his latest tracks below the label which featured UK rapper Loski, has been making rounds across the internet. With an approval rating of 98%, the track has been streamed over 5 million times in 5 months.

Lil Berete also had run-ins with the law and small scuffles with the owner of his apartment complex. One evening in Regent Park, he and his entourage received tickets for jaywalking. His lawyers claim that it’s a classic example of racial profiling. With regards to his apartment complex, Lil Berete was issued legal documentation for shooting music videos on private property without the required permit. Several of his music videos were filmed within the complex.

PERSONAL
Lil Berete’s height is under review. His net worth is estimated at $300 Thousand USD. Regent Park, his hometown, is no stranger to violence, gang activities, and subpar infrastructures. Over the years, it has made the news several times (often for the wrong reasons). Lil Berete admitted that he never took rapping seriously at the initial stages of his career. When he was an infant, his father passed away in a terrible car accident. Several of his songs display a combination of rap, melody, and a variety of instruments. Like many new artists, his music deal is not exclusive to the label. Lil Berete does retain some control over his work. Aside from music, he played soccer as a youngster. He is also an avid dancer. His Instagram account is home to 45k+ followers. His YouTube channel, Northside To Southside, has 25k+ subscribers. His relationship status is currently unknown.
