Kandi Burruss is an American singer, songwriter, and reality star. Her solo discography includes Hey Kandi… (2000) and Kandi Koated (2010). She’s a member of the female R&B group ‘Xscape’ with LaTocha Scott, Tamika Scott and Tiny Harris. They’ve released 3 studio albums and an EP. In 2009, Burruss joined the main cast of Bravo’s hit reality series The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Her screen credits include Are We There Yet?, Let’s Stay Together and the film Never Heard (2018).

Burruss was born on May 17, 1976, in College Park, Georgia. Her dad, Titus Burruss Jr, served as a reverend. Her mom’s name is Joyce Jones. Burruss suffered her first tragic loss in 1991. Her older brother, Patrick Riley, was killed in a car accident. He was 22. Burruss completed her high school studies at Tri-Cities High School. She graduated in 1994.

CAREER
Burruss began her recording career as a member of Xscape. The group was formed in 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. They performed as a 5-member group until Tamera Coggins-Wynn’s departure in 1993. Xscape was discovered by Jermaine Dupri who signed them to his So So Def recording label. Their debut studio album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, was released in October 1993 by Columbia Records. The album peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was supported by singles “Just Kickin’ It”, “Understanding” and “Love on My Mind.”

Xscape’s sophomore album, Off the Hook, arrived 2 years later in July 1995. It spawned the singles “Feels So Good”, “Who Can I Run To” and “Can’t Hang/Do You Want To.” The project featured production from Dupri, Carl-So-Lowe, Organized Noize, and Daryl Simmons. The album won the 1996 Soul Train Music Award for R&B/Soul Album of the Year. Xscape’s third album, Traces of My Lipstick, was released in May 1998. It was led by the song “The Arms of the One Who Loves You.” Their latest project, Here for It, arrived in the first quarter of 2018. It was released on the RedZone Entertainment label.

In 2000, Burruss won her first Grammy Award for songwriting. She co-wrote the hit single “No Scrubs” for TLC’s 3rd album FanMail (1999). Later that year she scored another hit with “Bills, Bills, Bills” for Destiny’s Child’s 2nd album The Writing’s on the Wall (1999). She’s also written for the likes of Pink, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and Alicia Keys among others.

Burruss’ debut solo album, Hey Kandi…, was released in September 2000 by Columbia. It charted at #72 on the Billboard 200 chart. The project was supported by singles “Don’t Think I’m Not” and “Cheatin’ on Me.” Her first EP, Fly Above, premiered in October 2009. It was led by the single “Fly Above”, produced by Drumma Boy. As of 2019, she’s appeared in more than 230 episodes. She also starred in the spin-off series The Kandi Factory (2013) and Kandi’s Wedding (2014). Burruss’ television credits include Are We There Yet?, Let’s Stay Together, and Single Ladies. She was cast as a houseguest in season 2 of Celebrity Big Brother.
