Joaquin Phoenix is an Oscar-nominated American actor, film producer, and activist. His film credits include Gladiator (2000), Her (2013), Inherent Vice (2014), and the upcoming Joker (2019). He portrayed singer/songwriter “Johnny Cash” in the biopic Walk the Line (2005). Phoenix was born Joaquin Rafael Bottom on October 28, 1974, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has 4 siblings, Summer, Liberty, Rain, and River Phoenix (d. 1993). His parents John and Arlyn were once members of the Children of God. The family changed their surname to “Phoenix” shortly after leaving the cult.

CAREER
Phoenix made his television debut in 1982 on the CBS series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He was 8 at the time. Other early television roles followed in The Fall Guy, Hill Street Blues, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The New Leave It to Beaver, Superboy, and Murder, She Wrote. Phoenix appeared opposite his brother River in a 1984 ABC Afterschool Special about dyslexia. He had a recurring role as “Doug Roberts” on the series Morningstar/Eveningstar (1986). Phoenix used the name “Leaf” for his early child acting career. He reverted back to Joaquin shortly after his 15th birthday. Phoenix co-starred with Nicolas Cage in the crime mystery 8mm (1999). He appeared alongside Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche in Return to Paradise (1998). Phoenix achieved critical acclaim for his portrayal of “Commodus” in Gladiator (2000). His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for best-supporting actor. Phoenix portrayed musician “Johnny Cash” in the biographical drama Walk the Line (2005). He held prominent roles in Signs (2002) with Mel Gibson, The Village (2004) with Adrien Brody, Ladder 49 (2004) with John Travolta, and The Master (2012) with Philip Seymour Hoffman. The latter earned him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Phoenix wrote, produced, and starred in the mockumentary film I’m Still Here (2010). The film was co-written and directed by Casey Affleck. His more recent projects include Irrational Man (2015), You Were Never Really Here (2017), Mary Magdalene (2018), and The Sisters Brothers (2018). He was cast in the title role for the upcoming DC film Joker (2019).
