Guy Hamilton Is Dead

ORIGIN
Guy Hamilton was an English film director best known for directing four James Bond Films. He was born to English parents on September 16, 1922, in Paris, France. Hamilton returned to London in 1939 as a teenager. He worked briefly with the Paramount News newsreel company before serving in the Royal Navy.

CAREER
Hamilton began his professional career as an assistant director to Carol Reed. Their first project was ‘The Fallen Idol (1948)’ followed by ‘The Third Man (1949)’. Hamilton made his directorial debut in the 1952 low-budget mystery film, The Ringer. He followed up with The Intruder (1953), The Colditz Story (1955), and The Devil’s Disciple (1959). Most of his early films were military/war-themed.

Hamilton directed his first James Bond movie, Goldfinger, in 1964. The film stars Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, and Gert Frobe. In 1965, Goldfinger became the first Bond film to receive an Academy Award. Hamilton also directed ‘Diamonds Are Forever (1971)’ starring Sean Connery, followed by ‘Live and Let Die (1973)’ & ‘The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)’ starring Roger Moore. Other notable films by Hamilton include Funeral in Berlin (1966), Evil Under the Sun (1982), and Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985). He retired from directing in 1989 following his last film, Try This One for Size.

PERSONAL
Guy Hamilton died on April 21, 2016, at the age of 93. A cause of death was not reported. He spent his last days in a hospital on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Hamilton was married to actress ‘Naomi Chance’ and then ‘Kerima’. He’s survived by his second wife.
