ORIGIN
Guaynaa is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer/songwriter from Caguas, Puerto Rico. He performs primarily reggaeton (dembow beats, perreo dancing) and he’s known for his playful style of writing. Guaynaa began turning heads in 2017 with the release of “Maria Freestyle” following Hurricane Maria. He followed up with fan favorites like “Rebota”, “Buyaka” and “Chicharron” featuring Cauty. Since his debut, he’s worked with acts like Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam, Farruko, Becky G, and Sech.
Guaynaa was born Jean Carlos Santiago Perez on September 16, 1992, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He grew up between Carolina and Canovanas. Jean Carlos played baseball while attending college in Puerto Rico. He eventually switched sports to equestrianism with hopes of someday becoming a jockey. He gave up on the dream of horse racing after spending 4 years in Boston (ages 18-22).
CAREER
Juan Carlos started out at age 10 freestyling and performing for his friends. In 2015, he took his craft mainstream as a rapper under the alias “Janko El Guayna.” Back then he worked with a record label called Real Music. He released songs “La Pista Esta Fea” and “Mothafoca.” Juan Carlos’ current moniker “Guaynaa” was derived from the Puerto Rican slang “guaynabicho” which refers to people from the city of Guaynabo. Though he didn’t grow up in Guaynabo, he was often referred to as “guayna” by his peers.
In December 2017, Guaynaa dropped his first viral hit titled “Maria Freestyle.” It was released in the wake of Hurricane Maria and it recounts the devastation it had on Puerto Rico. The song was directed by Beachy Boy. In July 2018, Guaynaa followed up with another banger called “Pirateando.” The matching music video attracted 3.7+ million views on YouTube. The success of ‘Maria Freestyle’ led to a recording deal with Sony Music.
Guaynaa’s most popular song to date “Rebota” premiered in December 2018. The song title translates to “Bounce” and it was produced by Charlie Way & Dante La Movie. Rebota spent more than 10 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. The music video clocked in 285+ million views within the first 9 months. It was directed by Gabriel Reyes and edited by Letour. Rebota gained further popularity with the #RebotaChallenge on social media. It sparked a remixed version with Nicky Jam, Farruko, Becky G, and Sech.
Guaynaa closed out 2018 with “Navidad en Puertorri” featuring Joselito Hernandez and Samuel Del Valle. In early 2019, he released singles “La Stripper”, “Mi Leona” with Ñejo, and “Bugalu” with KRZ. He was also featured on songs “Parties de Escuelas” by Karly & Yoe, and later on “Machuqueo” by Paulino Rey. He performed alongside Bad Bunny at Coliseo de Puerto Rico (San Juan) in March 2019. Guaynaa is currently signed to a joint venture deal with Universal Music Latino and Republic Records. His recent singles “Chicharron” (feat. Cauty) and “Buyaka” were released in August and September of 2019.
