Frederica Wilson is an American politician, educator, and member of the Democratic Party. She’s a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 24th district. Prior to that, she served as a member of the Florida Senate from the 33rd district. Wilson was born Frederica Patricia Smith on November 5, 1942, in Miami, Florida. Her parents were Beulah and Thirlee Smith. She’s a graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High School. She completed her B.A. degrees from Fisk University (1963) and her M.A. degree from the University of Miami (1972). She majored in Elementary Education.

CAREER
Prior to politics, Wilson served as the Principal of Skyway Elementary School (1980-92). She joined the Miami-Dade County School Board in 1992. During her tenure, she created the in-school mentoring program ‘5000 Role Models of Excellence Project’. The program was established to help prevent at-risk males from dropping out of school. Wilson served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 104th district from November 1998 through November 2002. She represented the 33rd district from November 2002 to December 2010. She served as Minority Leader Pro Tempore and as Minority Lead Whip. She supported Barack Obama and Joe Biden during the 2008 presidential election.

Wilson succeeded Kendrick Meek for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in the 2010 election. She was sworn into office on January 3, 2011. She represented Florida’s 17th during her first two years. She began representing the 24th district in 2013. Wilson serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and on the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. She’s also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Wilson opposes the Tea Party and she’s led efforts to combat bullying and hazing. She was very vocal in the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin.
