Dustin Hoffman is an Oscar-winning American actor and film director. He won Academy Awards for Best Actor for the 1980s films, Kramer vs. Kramer (1980) and Rain Man (1989). His credits include The Graduate (1967), Wag the Dog (1997), Quartet (2011), and the HBO series Luck (2011-12). Dustin Lee Hoffman was born on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He was named after actor Dustin Farnum. His parents were Lillian Gold (d. 1982) and Harry Hoffman (1987). He has an older brother named Ronald. Hoffman attended Los Angeles High School followed by Santa Monica College. He dropped out in 1956 to pursue acting.

Hoffman initially wanted to become a jazz pianist. He began his acting career as a stage actor with the Pasadena Playhouse. During his tenure, he met upcoming actor Gene Hackman. The two ended up moving to New York City in search of work. Hoffman made his film debut in Arthur Hiller’s black comedy, The Tiger Makes Out (1967). That same year he landed his breakout role as “Ben Braddock” in the comedy-drama, The Graduate (1967). The film was directed by Mike Nichols and also stars Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross. His other 1960s films include Midnight Cowboy (1969) and John and Mary (1969). Hoffman won a 1968 Drama Desk Award for outstanding performance in the Broadway play ‘Jimmy Shine’. Hoffman co-starred as “Ted Kramer” opposite Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). That role earned him an Academy Award for best actor. He picked up a second Academy Award for the comedy-drama, Rain Man (1988). The film was directed by Barry Levinson and stars Hoffman, Tom Cruise and Valeria Golino. Hoffman’s film credits include Papillon (1973) with Steve McQueen, All the President’s Men (1976) with Robert Redford, Tootsie (1982) with Jessica Lange, Hook (1991) with Robin Williams, and Wag the Dog (1997) with Robert De Niro. He voiced the character “Roscuro” for the animated film, The Tale of Despereaux (2008), and “Master Shifu” for the Kung Fu Panda film series. Huffman starred as “Chester Bernstein” on the HBO series Luck (2011-12). His directorial debut was the comedy-drama, Quartet (2012). The film was done on an $11 million budget and made $59.5 million at the box office.

Hoffman has won multiple awards throughout his lengthy career as an actor/director. His accolades include 2 Academy Awards, 6 Golden Globes, 4 BAFTAs, and 2 Emmys. He was honored with the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in 1999. He’s a 2012 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors.
