Alvarez was born Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan on July 18, 1990, in Guadalajara, Mexico. His father, Santos Alvarez, was a farmer. He inherited his red hair from his mother Ana Maria Barragan. His parents have since separated. Alvarez has 7 siblings, including Rigoberto, Ramon, Ricardo, and Ana Elda. He was raised in Juanacatlan, Jalisco. He dropped out of high school in 2005 to focus on boxing.

CAREER
Alvarez began training as a boxer at age 13. His initial goal was to protect himself from bullies who teased him over his red hair and freckles. He also drew inspiration from his older brother Rigoberto who just turned professional. His first trainers were the father-son duo, Chepo Reynoso and Eddy. Alvarez competed and won the silver medal at the 2004 Junior Mexican National Championships in Sinaloa. He won the gold medal in 2005 at age 15. His amateur record stands at 44 wins and 2 losses.
