Bob Barker is an American retired game show host, television personality and animal rights activist. He’s best known for hosting the game shows ‘The Price is Right’ and ‘Truth or Consequences’. His credits also include End of the Rainbow, and That’s My Line. Barker was born Robert William Barker on December 12, 1923 in Darrington, Washington. His mother, Matilda Kent Tarleton, was a teacher. His father, Byron John Barker, died in 1929. Barker’s mother remarried and the family moved to Springfield, Missouri. While there he attended Central High School followed by Drury College. He graduated in 1947 with a BA degree in economics. He also trained as a fighter pilot for the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Barker made his on air debut at the radio station “KTTS-FM” in Springfield, Missouri. He worked briefly at another station in Florida before moving to California in 1950. He hosted his own radio show ‘The Bob Barker Show’ for six years out of Burbank. Barker was hired by NBC in 1956. He hosted the game shows Truth or Consequences (1956-74), End of the Rainbow (1957-58), The Family Game (1967), Simon Says (1971) and That’s My Line (1980–1981). He also hosted the Miss Universe and the Miss USA pageant several times from 1967 through 1987.
Barker began hosting ‘The Price Is Right’ for CBS in September 1972. The game show was created by Bob Stewart, Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. Contestants were tasked with guessing the price of various products in order to win cash and prizes. Barker hosted the show from 1972 to 2007. He was succeed by Drew Carey. Barker hosted the annual New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade from 1969 to 1988. He appeared in the sports-comedy film, Happy Gilmore (1996) starring Adam Sandler. His television credits include Something So Right, Futurama, and Family Guy.
Barker has won 19 Emmy Awards, including 14 for outstanding game show host. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for daytime television in 1999. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Famein 2008. Barker’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1976.
