Alan Alda is an Emmy Award-winning American actor, director and screenwriter. He starred as “Captain Hawkeye Pierce” in the CBS series, M*A*S*H, and as “Arnold Vinick” in the NBC drama, The West Wing. His film credits include Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and The Aviator (2004). Alda was born Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo on January 28, 1936 in Bronx, New York. His father, Robert Alda, was an actor/singer, and his mother, Joan Browne, a former Miss New York. He had a younger brother, Antony, who was also an actor. He died at age 52 from cirrhosis of the liver in 2009. Alda attended Archbishop Stepinac High School followed by Fordham University. He graduated in 1956 with a BA degree in English.
Alda spent 6 months in the United States Army Reserve before taking up acting full time. He gained early exposure as a member of the Compass Players comedy revue and later as a member of the Cleveland Play House. His Broadway debut was ‘Only in America’ in 1959. Other early stage appearances include Purlie Victorious, Fair Game for Lovers, and The Owl and the Pussycat. He won Tony Award nominations for his roles in The Apple Tree, Jake’s Women, and Glengarry Glen Ross.
Alda made his feature film debut in Gone Are the Days (1963). He followed up with a starring role as “George Plimpton” in the sports-comedy, Paper Lion (1968). That role earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for new star of the year. Other early films include Jenny (1970) with Marlo Thomas, Same Time Next Year (1978) with Ellen Burstyn, and The Four Seasons (1981) with Carol Burnett. Alda was cast as “Captain Hawkeye Pierce” in the comedy-drama series, M*A*S*H. It ran on CBS from September 1972 to February 1983 for a total of 11 seasons. The series earned him several accolades including 3 Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding writing, directing and lead actor in a comedy series.
Alda starred opposite Caroline Aaron in the film, Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989). It was produced by Robert Greenhut and directed by Woody Allen. He appeared alongside Allen once more in Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993). Alda’s other films include The Aviator (2004) with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tower Heist (2011) with Ben Stiller and Bridge of Spies (2015) with Matt Charman. Alda hosted the program ‘Scientific American Frontiers’ on PBS from 1993 to 2007. He starred as “Arnold Vinick” on seasons 6 and 7 of NBC’s The West Wing (2004-06).
