Canadian hip-hop group, 88Glam was formed in 2017 by Toronto rappers Derek Wise and 88 Camino. Not your typical hardcore spitters, their music contain threads of RnB sounds and elements not generally associated with hip-hop. Officially signed to XO Records, a subsidiary below parent company Universal Music Group, co-founded by The Weeknd, the duo has released several hit singles including “12,” “Bali” ft. Nav, and “Lil Boat.” 88Glam have also unveiled several projects such as “88Glam Reloaded,” “88Glam2,” and “88Glam2.5.” Their musical success has led to collaboration with Nav, Lil Keed, Lil Yachty, Gunna, 2 Chainz, and, of course, The Weeknd.

Derek Wise was born Derek Bissue on December 11, 1992, in Toronto, Canada. He grew up listening to artists like LL Cool J, Trick Daddy, Juvenile, and Max B. His favorite rapper is the late Stack Bundles. At the age of 10, he began rapping. As a solo artist, he released multiple tracks including the popular singles “Lay Low” and “Free Up.” His first mixtape, Vacay, a 16-track effort, landed in October of 2012. On January 30, 2017, he dropped his debut album, Inglorious, which featured 14 tracks and guess appearance from Drew Howard. It’s worth noting that Derek Wise had a professional relationship with The Weeknd before the emergence of 88Glam.

88 Camino aka Drew Howard was born Shakqueel Burthwright on June 14, 1992, in Toronto, Canada. At age 9, he migrated to the U.S with his mother and spent a portion of his childhood in Oklahoma. Several years later, he would return to Canada. His rapping career started at the age of 17 and, before 88Glam was formed, he, too, released various tracks with hopes of making it big. Growing up, he drew inspiration from artists like OutKast, Lil Wayne, Hot Boys, and Lil Boosie.

CAREER
Before the formation of 88Glam, both rappers were affiliated with the crew, Get Home Safe, alongside fellow artist, Jazz Cartier. When the group disbanded, Derek Wise and 88 Camino stayed in contact, and, in 2017, the two assembled to form the duo, 88Glam. In November of 2017, the duo unveiled their debut self-titled mixtape. The project featured numerous songs including the mega-hits, “12” and “Bali” ft. Nav. The music video for “12” was featured exclusively on Billboard.com. To date, the visual has accumulated over 4.5 million views on YouTube and the audio has been streamed over 30 million times across various platforms. “Bali’s” official music video has witnessed 17M+ views. One of their most dynamic singles, the audio has been streamed 54M+ times on Spotify alone in 2yrs.

In April of 2018, “88GLAM” was re-released as “88GLAM Reloaded” with the addition of 4 tracks and a feature from 2 Chainz. Fast Forward several months, they released their 2nd project, “88GLAM2” on November 16, 2018. The album contained 14 tracks and featured Nav and Gunna. It was spearheaded by the popular track “Lil Boat.” Before the album dropped, “Lil Boat” saw daylight and it did well in building up anticipation. With just a year beneath its belt, the track has witnessed over 50 million streams. Several other tracks that performed well included “It’s A Flex” ft. NAV and “Purple Baguettes.”

On April 5, 2019, 88Glam dropped a 3rd installment titled “88GLAM2.5.” Not a full-blown new project, it comprised of 16 tracks, with songs from the previous project and a new feature. New to the album was Lil Yachty on the “Lil Boat” (Remix). Adding to their resume, 88Glam recently collaborated with Lil Keed on the single “Bankroll.”

During an interview, 88 Camino, the RnB type half, admits to meeting Derek Wise, the hardcore spitter, online. The group is extremely close to The Weeknd. In December of 2013, Derek Wise was allegedly taken into custody for charges relating to human trafficking. In 2016, all charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
