Muhammad Ali was an American professional boxer, social activist and philanthropist. He had an impressive record of 56 wins and 5 losses. Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. His father, Cassius Sr., was a painter, and his mother, Odessa, a maid. He had five siblings. Ali made his professional debut in October 1960, defeating opponent Tunney Hunsaker. He knocked out Sonny Liston in a 1964 matchup to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Ali was 6ft 3in tall and had a reach of 78in. He was known for his fancy footwork and speed in the ring. His was nicknamed ‘The Greatest’, ‘The People’s Champion’, and ‘The Louisville Lip’. He also popularized the slogan “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
Ali was arrested in 1967 following his refusal to serve in the U.S. armed forces. He was sentenced to five years in prison and his boxing license was suspended for three years. Ali made his grand return to the ring in 1970. He reclaimed the world heavyweight championship in a 1974 victory over Joe Frazier. Ali retired from boxing in 1981. He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2005. His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002.
