Stan Lee is a revered American comic book author, editor and publisher. He co-created superheroes like Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Iron Man. He was born Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922 in Manhattan, New York. His parents were Celia and Jack Lieber, and he has a younger brother named Larry. Lee and his family moved to the Bronx when he was a teenager. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School and joined the WPA Federal Theatre Project in 1939. He was influenced by the heroic films of actor Errol Flynn.
Lee worked as an assistant for Timely Comics in 1939 and was later formally hired by editor Joe Simon. Timely Comics evolved into Marvel Comics in the 1960s. Lee and Jack Kirby created the Fantastic Four in 1961. They followed up with the Hulk, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor and the X-Men. After several years as the comic-book division’s editor, Lee became Martin Goodman’s successor as publisher in 1972.
In 2001, Lee co-founded the media production company, POW! Entertainment. His autobiography ‘Excelsior! The Amazing Life of Stan’ was published in 2002. Lee was inducted into the ‘Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame’ in 1995, and the ‘Jack Kirby Hall of Fame’ in 1995. He was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2008, and his star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.
