Florence Henderson was an American television, film and stage actress. She spent over 60 years in entertainment and was best known for her role as “Carol Brady” on ABC’s The Brady Bunch. Henderson was born on February 14, 1934 in Dale, Indiana. Her mother, Elizabeth, was a homemaker, and her father, Joseph, a tobacco sharecropper. She had 9 older siblings. Henderson attended St. Francis Academy in Owensboro, Kentucky. She continued her education at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
Henderson learned to sing as a toddler. She started singing in public at 8 and by age 12 she was earning money performing locally. Henderson began her career as a stage actress in the late 1940s. Her early stage credits included the musicals Oklahoma!, South Pacific and Carousel. Henderson made her Broadway debut as “The New Girl” in Wish You Were Here (1952). She held the title role as “Fanny” in the musical Fanny (1954). Her stage credits also include The Girl Who Came to Supper, The Sound of Music, and Annie Get Your Gun.
Henderson starred in various Oldsmobile commercials from 1958 through 1961. She guest hosted The Today Show in 1962 with Johnny Carson. She also covered weather and light news as the “Today Girl” on The Today Show. In 1969, Henderson was cast as “Carol Ann Brady” in the ABC sitcom, The Brady Bunch. The show ran from September 1969 to March 1974 for a total of 117 episodes. The role of Carol Brady was reprised in The Brady Bunch Hour, The Brady Girls Get Married, The Brady Brides, A Very Brady Christmas and The Bradys.
Henderson made her feature film debut as “Nina Grieg” in the Song of Norway (1970). Her film credits included Holy Man (1998) with Eddie Murphy, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003) with David Spade and Fifty Shades of Black (2016) with Marlon Wayans. She competed on a number of game shows including Password, The $25,000 Pyramid, Weakest Link and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Henderson hosted The Florence Henderson Show from 2008 through 2016. The show won an Emmy Award nomination in 2010. Henderson was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars in 2010 at age 76. Her professional dance partner was ballroom dancer Corky Ballas. She also supported Maureen McCormick during season 23 of Dancing with the Stars.
Florence Henderson died on November 24, 2016 at the age of 82. Her reported cause of death was heart failure. She was checked in at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on November 23, 2016.
