Wilford Brimley is an American film and television actor. He had prominent roles in the television series The Waltons (1974-77) and Our House (1986-88). His film credits include The Natural (1984), Cocoon (1985) and The Firm (1993). He also starred in television commercials for Quaker Oats. Anthony Wilford Brimley was born on September 27, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His father worked in real estate. Brimley spent a few years in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He worked a number of odd jobs such as a blacksmith and as a wrangler. He served as a bodyguard for business magnate Howard Hughs.

CAREER
Brimley began his work in showbusiness as a riding extra and stuntman. He had uncredited roles in the films Bandolero! (1968), True Grit (1969) and Lawman (1971). His first credited film role was as “Ted Spindler” in The China Syndrome (1979). He appeared as a farmer in The Electric Horseman (1979) starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Brimley was cast in a recurring role as “Horace Brimley” in the CBS series The Waltons (1974-77). He appeared in a 1975 episode of the ABC western-drama series ‘Kung Fu’. Brimley starred as “Gus Witherspoon” on the ABC drama series Our House (1986-88). He picked up a CableACE Award nomination for the TV film, Act of Vengeance (1986). His television credits also include The Oregon Trail, Billy the Kid, Seinfeld, and Walker, Texas Ranger.

Brimley had a supporting role as assistant U.S. Attorney James A. Wells in the drama film, Absence of Malice (1981). He appeared in the horror film The Thing (1982) starring Kurt Russell. His first lead role was as “Ben Luckett” in the comedy-drama, Cocoon (1985). The film was directed by Ron Howard and it made $85.3 million at the box office. Brimley co-starred opposite Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies (1983). His film credits include High Road to China (1983) with Tom Selleck, The Firm (1993) with Tom Cruise, In & Out (1997) with Kevin Kline, and Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009) with Hugh Grant.

In addition to films, Brimley is known for his work in commercials. He’s appeared in television commercials for ‘Quaker Oats’ and for ‘Liberty Medical’. He’s also a talented singer and harmonica player. His jazz album, This Time, the Dream’s on Me, was released in 2004. It included songs like “Two for the Road”, “Crazy She Called Me” and “Polka Dots and Moonbeams”.
