Sharon Jones was a Grammy nominated American singer and lead vocalist of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. She was born to parents Ella and Charlie Jones on May 5, 1956 in Augusta, Georgia. She had five siblings, Dora, Isiah, Henry Jones, Willa and Charles. Jones grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where she attended Thomas Jefferson High School. She continued her education at Brooklyn College.
Jones started out singing in her local church choir. She competed in talent shows and provided backup vocals for local funk bands. She later worked as a corrections officer and as an armored car guard. Jones joined Gabriel Roth and the Dap-Kings as a backup singer in 1996. Her first single as lead vocalist was “Dam It’s Hot”. The song was produced by Desco Records.
The album, Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, was released in 2002. It marked the first full length release by Daptone Records. The group followed up with the albums Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007), and I Learned the Hard Way (2010). Jones’ sixth album, Give the People What They Want, was released in January 2014. It peaked at #22 on the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Album. Jones had a bit role in the film ‘The Great Debaters (2007)’ with Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker. She was the subject of the 2015 documentary film, Miss Sharon Jones!.
Sharon Jones died on November 18, 2016 at the age of 60. Her reported cause of death was pancreatic cancer. She was diagnosed with stage two pancreatic cancer in 2013. Jones never married and had no children. She’s survived by 4 siblings, 7 nieces and 3 nephews.
