Rosie O’Donnell is an American comedian, television show host, actress, celebrity blogger and LGBT activist. She’s best known for hosting the daytime talk shows ‘The Rosie O’Donnell Show’ and ‘The View’. O’Donnell was born Roseann O’Donnell on March 21, 1962 in Commack, New York. Her father, Edward, is an electrical engineer, and her mother, Roseann, a homemaker. She has four siblings, Daniel, Edward, Timothy and Maureen. O’Donnell attended Commack High School where she was voted homecoming and prom queen. She studied briefly at Dickinson College followed by Boston University.

O’Donnell grew up listening to the sounds of Barbra Streisand. She was also inspired comedians like Gilda Radner, Jerry Seinfeld and Bette Midler. O’Donnell made her first public performance as a stand-up comic in 1978 at age 16. She competed and won ‘Star Search’ multiple times before moving to Los Angeles in 1984. O’Donnell made her television debut as “Maggie O’Brien” on the NBC sitcom, Gimme a Break! (1986-87). O’Donnell made her feature film debut in A League of Their Own (1992) alongside Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. She followed up with supporting roles in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), The Flintstones (1994), and Beautiful Girls (1996). O’Donnell made her Broadway debut as “Rizzo” in the 1994 revival of Grease. Her stage credits also include Seussical (2001), Pippin (2004), Fiddler on the Roof (2004) and Love, Loss, and What I Wore (2009).

O’Donnell is probably best known for hosting her own variety talk show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, on NBC. The show ran from June 1996 to May 2002 for a total of six seasons. The show won five Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding talk show. O’Donnell served as a moderator on ‘The View’ and later as a co-host. She experimented with ‘The Rosie Show’ in 2012 but the series was short lived. It was cancelled after the first season due to low ratings.

In addition to comedy, O’Donnell is a lesbian rights activist and author. She’s supported the LGBT community and fought for gay adoption rights. Her publications include Find Me (2002) and Celebrity Detox (2007). O’Donnell won a Isabelle Stevenson Award in 2014 for her continued commitment to arts education in New York City public schools.
