Roger Stone is an American political consultant, lobbyist, Republican strategist and author. He served as an advisor to Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign. Roger Jason Stone Jr. was born on August 27, 1952 in Norwalk, Connecticut. His mother, Gloria Rose, was a reporter and his father, Roger, a businessman. He was raised in Lewisboro, New York. Stone attended high school in Westchester County, New York. He attended George Washington University but dropped out before completing a degree.
Stone gravitated towards the Republican Party at the early age of 12. The came shortly after reading Barry Goldwater’s 1960 book “The Conscience of a Conservative”. He also volunteered in Goldwater’s 1964 presidential campaign. At age 19, Stone dropped out of college to work on Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President. He was the youngest player in the Watergate scandal. He worked in the Office of Economic Opportunity under the Nixon administration. He worked briefly for Bob Dole before joining the Ronald Reagan’s 1976 presidential campaign. He was named chairman of the Young Republicans in 1977.
In 1978, Stone co-founded the National Conservative Political Action Committee. He served as chief strategist on Governor Thomas Kean’s campaign for Governor of NJ in 1981 and in 1985. Stone along with Charlie Black and Paul Manafort created the lobbying firm ‘Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly’ in 1980. It was merged with Martin B. Gold’s Gold & Liebengood in 1996 to form BKSH & Associates. In 1989, he co-founded the political action committee ‘Republicans for Choice’. It includes members of the Republican Party who support abortion rights. Stone has worked with a number of people over the years, including Arlen Specter, James Baker, Thomas Golisano, Joseph Bruno, Kristin Davis, and Gary Johnson. He was a member of the Libertarian Party from 2012 to 2015. He considered running for governor of Florida in 2014 on the Libertarian ticket.
Stone was introduced to Donald Trump in 1979 by his then attorney Roy M. Cohn. He lobbied for Trump’s casino business for many years. He served as campaign manager of Trump’s 2000 campaign for president in the Reform Party. That campaign was aborted. Stone served as Donald Trump’s advisor during the 2016 presidential campaign. He parted ways with the campaign in August 2015. He was banned from the television networks ‘CNN’ and ‘MSNBC’ in 2016.
Stone is the subject of the Netflix documentary film, Get Me Roger Stone (2017). He was also featured in the documentaries Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story (2008) and Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer (2010).
