Roger Smith was an American actor, screenwriter and former singer. He starred as “Jeff Spencer” in the series 77 Sunset Strip, and as “Douglas Roberts” in Mister Roberts. His film credits include Man of a Thousand Faces (1957) and Auntie Mame (1958). Roger LaVerne Smith was born on December 18, 1932 in South Gate, California. His parents were Dallas and Leone Smith. He’s a graduate of the University of Arizona at Tucson.
Smith was enrolled in dance/singing classes at the early age of 6. He was also an avid football player due to his height and built. Smith spent two years in the Naval Reserve prior to acting. During his tenure he was stationed with the Fleet All-Weather Training Unit-Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. Smith was encouraged and inspired by actor James Cagney to take up acting. His early film credits include No Time to Be Young (1957) and Operation Mad Ball (1957). He had a supporting role as “Creighton Chaney” in the film, Man of a Thousand Faces (1957). He later portrayed author “Patrick Dennis” in Auntie Mame (1958) starring Rosalind Russell.
Smith worked briefly with Columbia Pictures before moving to Warner Bros. in 1959. He was cast as “Jeff Spencer” in the private detective series, 77 Sunset Strip. The show ran on ABC from October 1958 to February 1964. Smith left the series in 1962 due to health problems. His next big role was that of “Lt. Douglas Roberts” on the NBC sitcom, Mister Roberts (1965-66). The show was cancelled after one season due to low ratings. Smith’s television credits also include The Ford Television Theatre, Father Knows Best, and Hawaiian Eye. Following his retirement, he served as manager for his second wife.
Roger Smith died on June 4, 2017 at the age of 84. His official cause of death was complications from Parkinson’s disease. He also fought the nerve disease Myasthenia gravis for several years. Smith was married to Australian actress ‘Victoria Shaw’ from 1956 to 1965. They had three children, Tracey, Jordan and Dallas. He wed second wife, actress/singer ‘Ann-Margret Olsson’ in May 1967. Their union lasted 50 years until his death in 2017.
