Robert Osborne was an American film historian, actor and television personality. He was best known as a host on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and The Movie Channel (TMC). His acting credits include The Californians (1958), The Beverly Hillbillies (1962) and The Man with Bogart’s Face (1980). Robert Jolin Osborne was born on May 3, 1932 in Colfax, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. He received a honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in 2005.
Osborne began his acting career with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at their Desilu Studios in Los Angeles, California. His early television credits include Death Valley Days (1954) and The Californians (1958). He was featured in a 1959 episode of the anthology series, Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse. Osborne made his feature film debut in The Man with Bogart’s Face (1980) starring Robert Sacchi and Victor Buono. Other notable appearances include The Beverly Hillbillies, Whirlybirds, and One Step Beyond.
Osborne’s first book, Academy Awards Illustrated, was published in 1965 by ESE California. His other publications include Hollywood Legends (1967) and 50 Golden Years of Oscar (1978). Osborne became a columnists for The Hollywood Reporter in the late 1970s. He joined the team at The Movie Channel in 1984 as a host. Osborne began his long tenure as the primary host for Turner Classic Movies in 1994. He hosted their nightly broadcasts and a number of primetime movies. He also co-hosted TCM’s weekly film showcase, The Essentials.
Osborne was honored with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. His accolades also include the 1984 Publicists Guild of America Press Award and the 2007 National Board of Review’s William K. Everson Award.
Robert Osborne died on March 6, 2017 at the age of 84. His official cause of death was not disclosed. He reportedly passed away at his New York home following a long illness. Osborne was never married and had no children.
