Rick Genest was a Canadian artist, model, actor, musician and performer. He was known by the monikers “Zombie Boy” and “Rico the Zombie” due to his skeletal/ghoulish body tattoos. His acting credits include Carny (2009), 47 Ronin (2013) and the series Silent Witness. He was featured in Lady Gaga‘s hit music video “Born This Way.” Rick Genest was born on August 7, 1985, in Quebec, Canada. He grew up in Montreal. His parents were Roch Genest and Catheryne Chappelle. He had two younger siblings. Genest was diagnosed with brain tumor at age 15. He was placed on a waiting list for several months prior to surgery. He reportedly lost 50% of his brain during the procedure.

Genest began experimenting with tattoos while waiting for his brain surgery. His first tattoo was at age 16. He ran away from home shortly after. Genest was introduced to the world in a 2006 blog post by editor Shannon Larratt. His first big interview followed in March 2008. Later that year he was featured in the June issue of the British magazine ‘Bizarre’. Genest had a small role in the television horror film Carny (2009). The film was written by Douglas G. Davis, directed by Sheldon Wilson and stars Lou Diamond Phillips. Genest appeared in a number of freak shows and exhibits early in his career. He performed with the slideshow ‘Alive on the Inside’ in Summer 2010. Genest’s Facebook fan page led to him being discovered by by Lady Gaga’s fashion director Nicola Formichetti. He also became the company’s first ever male spokesperson. Genest served as the face of Jay Z’s Rock-A-Wear fashion label during the 2012 European re-launch. He also worked with the Tonner Doll Company during the 2012 San Diego Comic Con.

In addition to modeling, Genest was an actor and musician. He was cast in a supporting role as “Foreman” in the fantasy-action film 47 Ronin (2013). Rick Genest died on August 1, 2018, at the age of 32. He fell to his death from a 3rd-floor balcony in Montreal. His 33rd birthday was less than a week away.
