Mystikal is a Grammy-nominated American rapper. He’s known for albums like Unpredictable (1997), Ghetto Fabulous (1998) and Let’s Get Ready (2000). His film credits include 13 Dead Men (2003), Mac & Devin Go to High School (2012) and My Side Piece (2016). Mystikal was born Michael Lawrence Tyler on September 22, 1970 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father died when he was about 7. He had a sister named Michelle. Mystikal attended Cohen High School around the same time as actor Tyler Perry. After graduation, he served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during the Gulf War.
Prior to music, Mystikal worked as an undercover security guard at a shopping mall in New Orleans. His early music influences include rapper LL Cool J. He eventually got his break after opening for Run-D.M.C. and Doug E. Fresh at a concert. His on-stage performance of the track “Not That Nigga” earned him a contract with the independent label Big Boy Records. Mystikal’s self-titled debut album was released by Big Boy in June 1994. The album was re-released as ‘Mind of Mystikal’ in October 1995 by Jive Records and BMG. He signed with Master P’s No Limit Records in 1996 and his sophomore album, Unpredictable, was released in 1997. The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was led by the single “Ain’t No Limit” featuring Master P & Silkk the Shocker. A second and final album by No Limit, Ghetto Fabulous, was released in December 1998. It sold 386,000 copies during opening week. The album featured guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson, Busta Rhymes, C-Murder, Naughty By Nature and a few others.
Mystikal’s best selling album, Let’s Get Ready, was released in September 2000. It was certified 2x Platinum with more than 2 million copies sold in the United States. The album peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It spawned the singles “Shake Ya Ass” featuring Pharrell Williams, and “Danger (Been So Long)” featuring Nivea. A fifth album, Tarantula, was released in December 2001. It features productions from The Neptunes, Scott Storch, Juvenile and KLC among others. The album picked up 2 Grammy Award nominations including one for Best Rap Album.
In addition to music, Mystikal has appeared in a handful of films and television shows. He was featured in the films I Got the Hook Up (1998) and Makin’ Baby (2002). He starred as “Caj” in the action film, 13 Dead Men (2003). The film was directed by Art Camacho and also stars Lorenzo Lamas.
