Morley Safer was a Canadian born news anchor, broadcast journalist and television personality. He won multiple Emmy Awards and was best known for his tenure on the CBS news-magazine, 60 Minutes. Safer was born to parents Anna and Max on November 8, 1931 in Toronto, Ontario. He was a student at Harbord Collegiate Institute and Bloor Collegiate Institute. He continued his studies at the University of Western Ontario.
Safer began his career with the local newspaper, Woodstock Sentinel-Review, in 1951. He worked briefly for the London Free Press and Toronto Telegram before joining the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He worked as a correspondent at CBC where he specialized in television war coverage.
Safer continued his career with CBS in 1964 as a correspondent. He reported on the U.S. Marines in Vietnam in 1965, and in 1967 he had a special report called “Morley Safer’s Red China Diary”. He also reported on the Nigerian Civil War. Safer served as CBS’ London bureau chief from 1967 to 1970. He joined 60 Minutes in 1970 replacing journalist Harry Reasoner. He held that position for 46 years. Safer won 12 Emmy Awards, 3 Overseas Press Club Awards, and 3 Peabody Awards. He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy from NATAS in 2003.
