Mase is an American rapper, pastor and motivational speaker. He was formerly known as Murda Mase. He rose to prominence on P. Diddy’s label Bad Boy Records. His discography includes Harlem World (1997), Double Up (1999) and Welcome Back (2004). Mase was born Mason Durell Betha on August 27, 1975 in Jacksonville, Florida. His parents are P.K. and Mason “Father Lucky” Betha. He has a twin sister named Stason. He also has four older siblings. Mase spent his early childhood in Harlem, New York, before moving back to Florida at age 13. He returned to New York two years later. Mase showed promise as a basketball player while attending Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. He earned an athletic scholarship to State University of New York at Purchase. Later in his career he studied mathematics at Clark Atlanta University.
Mase was a member of the 1990s rap group ‘Children of the Corn’. The other members were Big L, Bloodshed, Cam’ron and Herb McGruff. They were active from 1993 to 1999. The group disbanded following the deaths of Bloodshed and Big L. In 1996, Mase signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment as a solo artist. The label was home to East coast rapper The Notorious B.I.G. They were both featured on the 1996 single “Only You” from the R&B group 112. Mase became a household name appearing on tracks by Diddy, Brian McKnight, and Mariah Carey. His debut album, Harlem World, was released in October 1997. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, and on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was certified 4x Platinum and it was nominated for a Grammy for best rap album. It was supported by the singles “Lookin’ at Me”, “Feel So Good”, “What You Want” and “24 Hrs. to Live”.
Mase’s sophomore album, Double Up, was released in June 1999. It sold 107,000 copies during opening week. The album featured guest appearance from Funkmaster Flex, Blackstreet, Harlem World and a few others. Mase left the rap scene in 1999 to become a pastor. In 1999, he founded the Saving a Nation of Endangered Ministries (SANE), in Atlanta. His memoir ‘Revelations: There’s a Light After the Lime’ was published in 2001. Mase ended his 5-year hiatus with the release of his third album, Welcome Back, in August 2004. It rose to Gold certification with songs like “Welcome Back” and “Breathe, Stretch, Shake”. The album featured production from The Movement, Rick Rock, Tyrese Jones, and Park Jin-Young. Mase announced his departure from Bad Boy Records in December 2012.
