Marisol Escobar was a French sculptor who worked primarily in the New York City area. She rose to fame in the 1960s and was known for her boxlike figurative works. Marisol was born to Venezuelan parents Gustavo and Josefina on May 22, 1930 in Paris, France. She spent most of her childhood between Los Angeles, and Paris. Marisol attended Jepson Art Institute followed by École des Beaux-Arts. She moved to New York City in 1950 and continued her education at the Art Students League of New York. She also studied at the New School for Social Research under Hans Hofmann.
Marisol started out as a painter. She shifted her focus to sculpting after discovering pre-Columbian artifacts in 1951. Marisol was associated with Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Her first exhibition was at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1958. She was honored with the Award of Excellence in Design from The Arts Commission of New York City that same year.
Marisol rose to prominence in the 1960s with her mix-media figure groups. She had several exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Stable Gallery in New York City. Her pop art influence included artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. She appeared in Warhol’s film Kiss (1963), and 13 Most Beautiful Girls (1964). Popular works by Marisol include The Last Supper, Dust Bowl Migrants and Father Damien. Her sculptural portrait of Hugh Hefner was featured on the cover of Time magazine in March 1967. Marisol was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1978. She was awarded the Premio Gabriela Mistral in 1997.
Marisol Escobar died on April 30, 2016 in New York City. She was 85. No official cause of death was reported. She was in frail health prior to her death.
