Loretta Lynn is an American country music singer and songwriter. She’s one of the most decorated female country musician of all time. Her discography includes Coal Miner’s Daughter (1970) and Van Lear Rose (2004). Lynn was born Loretta Webb on April 14, 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She was raised in a coal-mining community by parents Clara and Ted Webb. She is the second of 8 children. Lynn is of Scots-Irish and Cherokee descent. She was named after famed actress Loretta Young.
Lynn began singing at her local church at a young age. She taught herself to play the guitar. She also performed at local venues with her first band, the Trailblazers. Lynn landed a recording contract with Zero Records in 1960. Her debut single “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” was released in March 1960. The track rose to #14 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Lynn later settled in Nashville, Tennessee, and before long she was signed to Decca Records. Her first Decca hit “Success” was released in April 1962. It became her first top 10 single after peaking at #6.
Lynn’s debut studio album, Loretta Lynn Sings, was released in December 1963 by Decca. It peaked at #2 on the country charts. Her 1970 album, Coal Miner’s Daughter, sold over 500,000 copies and was certified Gold by the RIAA. It was adopted into a 1980 film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Lynn’s other projects include Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind), You Ain’t Woman Enough, Fist City, and Van Lear Rose. She’s also know for the more controversial “The Pill”, “One’s on the Way” and “Rated ‘X”. Lynn’s upcoming album, Wouldn’t It Be Great, is scheduled for a 2017 release by Sony Legacy Recordings.
Lynn was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1983), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1988) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2008). She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013. She’s also won multiple CMAs, Grammys and ACM Awards.
Loretta Lynn has an estimated net worth of $60 million. She was married to talent manager ‘Oliver Lynn’ from 1948 until his death from diabetes complications in 1996. They had six children: Patsy, Peggy, Jack Benny, Ernest Ray, Betty Sue and Cissie. Jack Benny and Betty Sue died at age 34 and 64 respectively.
Lynn suffered a stroke at her Tennessee home on Thursday May 4, 2017. She was admitted into a Nashville hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
