Lonnie Mack was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was a versatile musician who had success in rock, blues and country. Mack was born Lonnie McIntosh on July 18, 1941 in Dearborn County, Indiana. He grew up on a farm without electricity near the Ohio River. Mack developed an interest in R&B and gospel music after listening on their battery-powered radio. His early musical influences include Merle Travis, Ray Charles, Bobby Bland and George Jones.
Mack started out playing the acoustic guitar at the age of seven. He dropped out of high school in his early teens and began playing professionally. He was known for using fake IDs to perform in various clubs and roadhouses. Mack bought the ‘Gibson Flying V’ electric guitar in 1958. He nicknamed the guitar “number 7” and used it throughout his musical career.
Mack’s debut album, The Wham of that Memphis Man, was released in 1964 by Fraternity Records. It featured the instrumentals “Wham!” and “Memphis”. Mack was signed to Elektra Records in 1968. The albums ‘Glad I’m in the Band’ and ‘Whatever’s Right’ were released in 1969 followed by ‘The Hills of Indiana’ in 1971. After several years out of the public eye, Mack re-emerged in 1983. He followed up with his 1985 album, Strike Like Lightning. His final album, Attack of the Killer V, was released in 1990. Mack was inducted into the International Guitar Hall Of Fame and the Southern Indiana Musicians’ Association Hall of Fame in 2001. He was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2005.PERSONAL
Lonnie Mack died on April 21, 2016 at the age of 74. He reportedly died of natural causes at Centennial Medical Center close to his home in Tennessee. He’s survived by five children and several grandchildren.
