Kathy Griffin is an American comedian, actress, reality star, writer and LGBT activist. She won two Emmy Awards for her reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. Her comedy albums include For Your Consideration (2008) and Calm Down Gurrl (2013). Kathleen Mary Griffin was born on November 4, 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois. Her father, John, was an electronic store manager, and her mother, Maggie, a hospital administrator. She has four older siblings, John, Gary, Kenny and Joyce. Griffin attended Oak Park and River Forest High School. She later studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles.
Griffin developed an interest in musical theatre during high school. She appeared in school plays such as ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’. Her very first television appearance was as an extra on a Chicago White Sox Commercial. Griffin moved to Los Angles in 1978. She joined and later became a regular cast of the comedy troupe, The Groundlings. She made guest appearances on shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. She voiced the character “Alice” from the animated series Dilbert (1999-2000).
Griffin landed her breakout role as “Vicki Groener” on the NBC sitcom, Suddenly Susan. The show ran from September 1996 to December 2000 for 93 episodes.
