John Glenn was an American astronaut and politician. In 1962 he became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth. He served as U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999. Glenn was born to parents Clara and John Sr. on July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio. He grew up in New Concord, Ohio, where he attended New Concord High School. Glenn continued his education at Muskingum College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.
Glenn joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1942. He completed his training in 1943 and was deployed as a Marine fighter pilot during World War II. He flew a total of 59 combat missions in the South Pacific. Glenn continued his services with the U.S. Marine Corps. He completed 90 missions during the Korean War. Glenn graduated from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School in 1954. He then served as a test pilot on Navy and Marine Corps jet fighters from 1956 to 1959. He completed a supersonic flight from Los Angeles to New York in July 1957. Dubbed “Project Bullet”, the mission was completed in a time of 3 hours and 23 minutes.
Glenn was recruited for the NASA space program in 1958. He was selected along with six others. They became known as the Mercury 7. Glenn made history on February 20, 1962 when he piloted the Friendship 7 spacecraft three times around the Earth. The mission lasted for 4 hours and 55 minutes. Glenn was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.
Glenn began his political career in 1964 as a member of the Democratic Party. He ran for a U.S. Senate seat from Ohio but was forced to withdraw due to a head concussion. Glenn was successful in securing the Senate seat on his third attempt in 1974. He served four terms from December 1974 to January 1999. He also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs from 1987 to 1995. Glenn returned to space on October 29, 1998 aboard the the space shuttle Discovery. John Glenn died on December 8, 2016 at the age of 95. His official cause of death was not disclosed. He was hospitalized at the James Cancer Hospital, OSU Wexner Medical Center a week prior to his death. Glenn’s health had been rapidly declining since 2013. He had suffered a stroke and had heart valve and knee replacement surgeries in recent years. His final resting place was at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia. Glenn was 5ft 10in tall and had a net worth of $5 million. He was married to ‘Anna Castor’ from 1943 until his death in 2016. They had two children, David and Carolyn. He’s also survived by 2 grandchildren.
