Jim Vance was an American television news anchor for Washington, D.C. He served as an anchorman for NBC4 for more than 45 years. Throughout his career, he’s won multiple awards including 17 local Emmys. Vance was born James Howard Vance III on January 10, 1942 in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. His father, James Jr., was a World War II veteran, and his mother, Eleanor, worked different jobs in Philadelphia. At age 9, Vance lost his father to cirrhosis of the liver. He was raised primarily by his grandparents. He completed a BS degree in secondary education at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
After college, Vance taught English at a junior high school for a few years. His first reporting gig was for the Philadelphia Independent newspaper. He then reported briefly for WKBS-TV. Vance was hired by WRC-TV in 1969. The station is owned by NBC and it is headquartered in Washington, D.C. In 1972, Vance’s position at the station was elevated to co-anchor. He was the first African-American at the time to hold said position.
Vance worked alongside Glenn Rinker at WRC-TV from 1972 to 1976. He was pared with Sue Simmons from 1976 to 1980. He was also known for his work with fellow news anchor Doreen Gentzler. During his tenure, he covered events such as the ‘1977 Hanafi Siege’ and the ‘1982 Air Florida Flight 90 crash’. Vance made a came appearance in the political-thriller, State of Play (2009), starring Russell Crowe. He’s also made guest appearance in the NBC series ‘The Event’ and ‘The Blacklist’. Vance has won a total of 17 local Emmy Awards. He was inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame in 2007.
Jim Vance died on July 22, 2017 at the age of 75. He reportedly died of complications of cancer. His cancer diagnosis was first announced in May 2017. Vance was married three times. His third wife, Kathy McCampbell, was a former television producer for Channel 4 news. He’s survived by his wife, and by his children, Dawn, Amani and Brendon.
