Jerry Van Dyke was an American actor and comedian. He had memorable roles in television, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, Coach, Accidental Family, and My Mother the Car. His film credits include Love and Kisses (1965) and Angel in My Pocket (1969). Van Dyke was born on July 27, 1931, to parents Hazel and Loren. They worked as a stenographer and traveling salesman respectively. He had a older brother, Dick, also an actor. Van Dyke grew up in Danville, Illinois, where he attended Danville High School.
Van Dyke began his stand-up career in his teens. Post high school, he performed locally at nightclubs and strip joints. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952. During his tenure he performed with the group ‘Tops in Blue’. They were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1954. Van Dyke found work at the television station ‘WTHI-TV’ in Terre Haute, Indiana. His early television credits include The Dick Van Dyke Show, and The Judy Garland Show. He had supporting roles in the 1960s films McLintock! (1963) and Palm Springs Weekend (1963). He hosted the 1963 game show ‘Picture This’ for CBS.
Van Dyke turned down prominent roles on the CBS series ‘Gilligan’s Island’ and ‘The Andy Griffith Show’. He opted for a role as “Dave Crabtree” on My Mother the Car (1965-66), and as “Jerry Webster” on Accidental Family (1967-68). Van Dyke co-starred as “Freddy” opposite Ricky Nelson in the comedy film, Love and Kisses (1965). He appeared alongside Andy Griffith and Lee Meriwether in Angel in My Pocket (1969). Van Dyke portrayed assistant football coach “Luther Van Dam” on the ABC series Coach (1989-97). The show ran for 9 seasons and he earned 4 Emmy Award nominations. His television credits also include Teen Angel, You Wish, Fresno, 13 Queens Boulevard, Fantasy Island, The Middle, and Yes, Dear. Jerry Van Dyke died on January 5, 2018 at the age of 86. His reported cause of death was heart failure. He was also involved in a 2015 car accident which seriously affected his health. Van Dyke was married to first wife ‘Carol Johnson’ from 1957 to 1974. They had three children, Jerri, Kelly (d. 1991) and Ronald. His second wife was ‘Shirley Ann Jones’.
