James Toback is an American screenwriter, film director and actor. He’s written and directed more than 12 films between 1974 and 2017. The crime-drama film Bugsy (1991) won an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. James Lee Toback was born on November 23, 1944 in New York City, New York. His parents were Selma Judith and Lionel Toback. He’s a graduate of The Fieldston School (1963) and Harvard College (1966). Toback had a near fatal experience with the Drug LSD during his college years. He reportedly took a single dose which lasted 8 days before he was administered an antidote.
Prior to films, Toback worked as a journalist. During his tenure, he did a story for Esquire magazine on professional football player Jim Brown. The assignment led to him living at Brown’s house for more than a year. His experience was documented in the book, Jim: The Author’s Self-Centered Memoir on the Great Jim Brown (1972). Toback taught creative writing at the City College of New York in the early 1970s. His first screenplay was the crime-drama film, The Gambler (1974). A portion of the film was shot at City College. It was directed by Karel Reisz and stars James Caan and Lauren Hutton.
Toback’s directorial debut was the drama Fingers (1978) starring Harvey Keitel. French director Jacques Audiard remade the film years later as The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005). Toback’s third film ‘Love and Money’ was released in 1982. He served as writer, director and producer. His on-screen debut was as “Leo Boscovitch” in Exposed (1983). He had a small role in Woody Allen’s Alice (1990) starring Mia Farrow. Toback wrote the original screenplay for the crime-drama Bugsy (1992). The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including best original screenplay. He directed the documentary film Tyson (2008) starring Mike Tyson.
