Jake LaMotta was an American former professional boxer and stand-up comedian. He was nicknamed “The Raging Bull”. He held the title of World Middleweight Champion from 1949 to 1951. LaMotta was the subjected of Martin Scorsese’s film Raging Bull (1980) starring Robert De Niro. He was also known for his rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson. Jake was born Giacobbe LaMotta on July 10, 1922 in the Bronx, New York. He had four siblings, Joe, Al, Maria and Anne.
LaMotta started out as a street fighter. He was encouraged by his father to box in an effort to earn money for the family. LaMotta turned professional in 1941 at the age of 19. He fought a total of 106 professional fights throughout his career. His record stands at 83 wins (30 by KO), 19 losses and 4 draws. In the ring, LaMotta was known as a fearsome brawler and for his ability to take punches. He won his first 14 fights in the middleweight class. His first loss was to Jimmy Reeves in September 1941. LaMotta developed a rivalry with boxing legend Sugar Ray Robinson. He won 1 of their 6 fights. He fought a number of other boxers including Billy Fox, Fritzie Zivic, Tony Janiro and Tommy Bell. LaMotta bested France’s Marcel Cerdan for the World Middleweight title in June 1949. He defended his title against Tiberio Mitri in July 1950 and against Laurent Dauthuille in September 1950. LaMotta retired from the ring in 1954. He was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1986 and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
LaMotta’s autobiography ‘Raging Bull: My Story’ was published in 1970. It was adopted into a 1980 black-and-white film by Martin Scorsese. The film stars Robert De Niro and it won two Academy Awards. A second book titled ‘Raging Bull II’ was published in 1986. LaMotta toured as a stand-up comedian. His film credits include The Hustler (1961), Firepower (1979) and Maniac Cop (1988). He was featured in the 2012 off-Broadway play Lady and the Champ.
Jake LaMotta died on September 19, 2017 at the age of 95. His reported cause of death was complications of pneumonia. He’s survived by his 7th wife, Denise Baker, and by his 4 daughters, Jacklyn, Christie, Elisa and Mia. His two sons, Jake Jr. and Joseph, both died in 1998. LaMotta was 5ft 8in tall and he was of Italian descent. He had an estimated net worth of $5 million.
