Hugh Hefner was an American adult magazine publisher, entrepreneur and creator of the Playboy brand. He was also known for the hit reality series ‘The Girl Next Door’. Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius Hefner. The were both educators. He had a younger brother named Keith. Hefner attended Steinmetz High School followed by the University of Illinois. He graduated in 1949 with a BA degree in psychology and a double minor in creative writing and art. He studied sociology briefly at Northwestern University. Hefner spent two years as a writer for a military newspaper during World War II. He was discharged in 1946.
Hefner started out as copywriter for Esquire magazine at their Chicago office in the early 1950s. He left the company after he was denied a raise. This prompted him to start his own publication using money raised from 40+ investors. The magazine was originally titled “Stag Party”. It was changed to “Playboy magazine” to avoid trademark infringement with the already existing Stag magazine. The first installment of Playboy was issued in December 1953. It featured a centerfold photo of actress Marilyn Monroe in the nude. The magazine’s debut sold upwards of 50,000 copies. The company logo which shows a rabbit wearing a tuxedo bow tie was introduced in the second issue. Playboy have since evolved into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. The brand went public in the 1970s and now features hotel resorts, modeling agencies, nightclubs and more. It featured a number of female celebrities over the years, including Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Kim Kardashian and Kate Moss.
Hefner hosted the television series, Playboy’s Penthouse (1959-60) and Playboy After Dark (1969-70). Those programs featured guests like Nina Simone, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald and Milton Berle. Hefner starred in the reality series ‘The Girl Next Door’ on the E! network. The show was co-created with producer Kevin Burns. It featured Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson. A total of 6 seasons were aired between August 2005 to August 2010. Hefner made cameo appearance in films like The House Bunny (2008), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Bettie Page Reveals All (2012). He’s appeared on television programs like Sex and the City, Entourage, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Hefner’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame on his 54th birthday in 1980. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American Society of Magazine Editors in 1998. He was also a recipient of the Henry Johnson Fisher Award.PERSONAL
