Harper Lee was an American novelist and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. She was born to Frances and Amasa Lee on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She had four older siblings. She attend Monroe County High School, which was located a few blocks away from her house. Lee studied at Huntingdon College in Montgomery before transferring to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She moved to New York City in 1949 where she worked as an airline reservation agent.

Lee completed the manuscript for ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ in 1959 and the novel was published on July 11, 1960 by Lippincott. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. The novel was adopted into a 1962 film directed by Robert Mulligan. Lee’s second novel ‘Go Set a Watchman’ was published half a century later on July 14th, 2015 by HarperCollins. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2007.

Harper Lee died on February 19, 2016 at the age of 89. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at an assisted living facility. She had suffered a stroke back in 2007 but recovered. She was 5ft 2in tall and had a net worth of $35 million. She was never married and had no children.
