Bill Cosby is an American actor, comedian, producer and author. He’s best known for the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984-92). His credits include The Electric Company, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and A Different World. He’s created the fictional character “Fat Albert”. Cosby was born William Henry Cosby, Jr. on July 12, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother, Anna Pearl, was a maid, and his father, William Henry Cosby Sr., served in the U.S. Navy. He has three younger brothers, Russell, Robbert and James (d. 1947). Cosby earned his BA degree from Temple University (1971) and his MA and EdD from the University of Massachusetts (1973, 1976). He served on the board of trustee at Temple University from 1982 to 2014.
Cosby began his stand-up career performing at nightclubs in San Francisco. His television debut was on the NBC adventure series ‘I Spy’. He was cast as “Alexander Scott” alongside Kelly Robinson (played by Robert Culp). The show ran for three seasons from 1965 to 1968. Cosby starred as “Chet Kincaid” on The Bill Cosby Show (1969-71), and as “Hank” on The Electric Company (1971-73). He created and voiced the title character “Fat Albert” for the animated series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972-85). He produced the NBC sitcom, A Different World (1987-93). Other notable television shows include Pinwheel (1977-90), The Cosby Show (1984-92), The Cosby Mysteries (1994-95), Cosby (1996-2000), OBKB (2010-12) and Kids Say the Darndest Things (1998-2000). His film credits include Uptown Saturday Night (1974) with Sidney Poitier, California Suite (1978) with Alan Alda, and The Devil and Max Devlin (1981) with Elliott Gould.
