Adam West was an American actor. He was best know for his superhero role as Batman in the 1960s television series. His film credits include Geronimo (1962) and Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964). He’s also done voice work for animated shows like Family Guy, The Simpsons and The Fairly OddParents. West was born William West Anderson on September 19, 1928 in Walla Walla, Washington. His father, Otto Anderson, was a farmer, and his mother, Audrey Speer, an opera singer. He had a brother named John. West attended Walla Walla High School followed by Whitman College. He graduated in 1951 with a BA degree in literature. During college he was also active in sports like swimming, water polo and track.
West moved to Hawaii in the mid 1950s to work on the children show, El Kini Popo Show. His work caught the attention of a Hollywood producer who helped him secure a contract with Warner Bros. Studios. He eventually moved to Hollywood and adopted the stage name Adam West. West’s film debut was the drama, The Young Philadelphians (1959), starring Paul Newman. He starred as “Lieutenant John Delahay” opposite Chuck Connors in the western, Geronimo (1962). Other films include Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) with Paul Mantee, The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1969) with Nancy Kwan, and The Outlaws Is Coming (1965) with The Three Stooges.
West had a recurring role as “Sergeant Steve Nelson” on the hit crime-drama series, The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor. He was cast as “Bruce Wayne / Batman” in the Batman live action series. The show ran on ABC from January 1966 to March 1968 for 3 seasons. The role of his sidekick “Dick Grayson / Robin” was played by actor Burt Ward. West had a supporting role as principal “Ken Schwinger” in the children’s series, The Adventures of Pete & Pete (1993-96).
