Heather Menzies was a Canadian-American actress, ballerina and model. She starred as “Louisa von Trapp” in the drama film The Sound of Music (1965). Her screen credits include Sssssss (1973), Piranha (1978) and the CBS series Logan’s Run (1977-78). Menzies was born on December 3, 1949 in Toronto, Canada. Her parents were of Scottish descent. She had a sister named Sheila. Menzies spent her early childhood in Canada before moving to Florida and later to California. She attended Burroughs High School followed by Hollywood High School. She took acting classes at the Falcon Studio’s University of the Arts in Hollywood.

Menzies’ feature film debut was the musical drama, The Sound of Music (1965). She was cast as “Louisa von Trapp”. The film was directed by Robert Wise and the main cast include Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. ‘The Sound of Music’ made upwards of $285 million at the box office. It received 5 Academy Award nominations including one for best picture. Menzies starred as “Maggie McKeown” opposite Bradford Dillman in the horror flick, Piranha (1978). She appeared alongside Strother Martin and Dirk Benedict in Sssssss (1973). Her film credits include Hawaii (1966) with Julie Andrews, How Sweet It Is! (1968) with James Garner, and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) with Kurt Russell.

Menzies made her small screen debut in the 1960s shows My Three Sons, The Farmer’s Daughter, Dragnet 1967, and Marcus Welby, M.D. She was cast as “Jessica” in the short lived CBS series Logan’s Run (1977-78). The series was based on Michael Anderson’s 1978 film of the same name. Menzies had a recurring role as “Cybill Hartman” in ‘The Love Boat’ and as “Charlotte Henderson” in ‘Vega$’. She was featured in the TV films James Dean (1976) and Captain America (1979). Her television credits also include Bonanza, S.W.A.T., Barnaby Jones, and T. J. Hooker. Her stage credits include Love Letters, The Christmas Carol, Barefoot in the Park, and The Hasty Heart.

Heather Menzies died on December 24, 2017 at the age of 68. Her reported cause of death was brain cancer. She’s survived by three children and several grandchildren. Menzies was around 5ft 6in tall and she was of Scottish ancestry. She was married to first husband ‘John Cluett’ from 1969 to 1973. Her second husband was film actor ‘Robert Urich’. Their union lasted from 1975 until his death in 2002. They had 3 children, Ryan, Emily and Allison. Menzies launched the ‘Robert Urich Foundation’ following the death of Robert Urich. The foundation raises funds and awareness for cancer research/patients.
