Gordie Howe was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and a 23-time NHL All-Star. Dubbed “Mr. Hockey”, he was rated among the best to every play the sport. He played an impressive 26 seasons in the National Hockey League, and 6 seasons in the World Hockey Association. Howe was born to parents Katherine and Albert on March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada. He had eight brothers and sisters including, Vic, who also played in the NHL. He grew up in Saskatoon where her worked briefly as a construction worker.
Howe began his hockey career at King George Community School. The team won consecutive championships from 1941-42 and again in 1944. He also played bantam hockey with the King George Athletic Club. Howe was approached by a New York Rangers scout in 1943 but he turned down their offer. He signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings the following year. He played a full season with the Omaha Knights (1945-46) before returning to the Red Wings.
Howe was 6ft tall and played the right wing position. He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in October 1946. He played 25 seasons with the Red Wings and won five Stanley Cup Championships. He was a 12-time NHL First All-Star Team, and a 9-time NHL Second All-Star Team. He’s won both the Art Ross and the Hart Memorial Trophy six times. Howe retired from the ice in 1971 and was inducted into the International Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. He made his grand return in 1973 and played six seasons in the WHA. He played a single game with the Detroit Vipers in 1997 in the International Hockey League. Howe had a total of 801 goals, and 1850 points during his NHL career. The “Gordie Howe hat trick” was adopted by the NHL in his honor. It includes a goal, an assist, and a fight during a single game.
Gordie Howe passed away on June 10, 2016 at the age of 88. No official cause of death was reported. However, he was living with dementia and he also suffered a major stroke in October 2014. Howe had a net worth of $10 million. He was married to ‘Colleen Joffa’ from 1953 until her death in 2009. They had four children, Marty, Mark, Murray and Cathy.
