Gord Downie was a Canadian rock musician and lead singer for the rock band The Tragically Hip. His discography include Coke Machine Glow (2001), The Grand Bounce (2010) and Secret Path (2016). He was also a writer and occasional actor. Gordon Edgar Downie was born on February 6, 1964 in Amherstview, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Edgar Charles and Lorna. He had four siblings, including brothers Mike and Patrick. Downie was raised in the suburb of Kingston, Ontario. He attended Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute. He also studied at Ernestown Secondary School and Queen’s University.

CAREER
Downie co-founded the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip in 1983. The current members are Paul Langlois (guitarist), Rob Baker (guitarist), Gord Sinclair (bassist) and Johnny Fay (drummer). They’ve released a total of 14 studio albums, 2 live albums and more than 50 singles. 9 of their albums have topped the Canadian Albums chart. They’ve won multiple accolades, including 16 Juno Awards. The Hip started out performing cover songs at local venues. They caught the attention of MCA Records who offered them a recording contract. Their debut studio album, Up to Here, was released in September 1989. It was certified Diamond with over 1 million copies sold in Canada. They released 4 more albums on the MCA label, Road Apples (1991), Fully Completely (1992), Day for Night (1994) and Trouble at the Henhouse (1996). The Hip’s later albums were released by Universal Music Canada. Their latest project, Man Machine Poem, was released in June 2016.

Downie’s debut solo album, Coke Machine Glow, was released on the label Zoe in July 2001. It featured a mix of alternative rock and spoken words. His sophomore album, Battle of the Nudes, was released two years later by Rounder Records. Downie’s best performing solo album, Secret Path, was released in October 2016. It peaked at #4 on the Canadian Albums chart. His other projects include The Grand Bounce (2010) and Introduce Yourself (2017). He worked alongside The Sadies on the collaboration album, And the Conquering Sun (2014).

In addition to music, Downie was a writer and actor. He made a cameo appearance in the romantic-comedy, Men with Brooms (2002), starring Paul Gross. He was cast as a cop in Mike Clattenburg’s Trailer Park Boys: The Movie (2006). His credits include drama films Nothing Really Matters (2008) and One Week (2008). Gord Downie died on October 17, 2017 at the age of 53. His reported cause of death was glioblastoma (brain cancer). He was first diagnosed with terminal brain tumor in May 2016. Downie was about 6ft 1in tall and he was of Scottish descent. His net worth was estimated at $10 million. He was married to ‘Laura Leigh Usher’ and they had four children. The two separated at some point prior to Downie’s cancer diagnosis. Laura is a Cancer survivor.
