Garry Marshall was an American film director, actor and producer. He created the ABC sitcom ‘Happy Days’, and directed films like Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride. Marshall was born Garry Kent Masciarelli on November 13, 1934 in the Bronx, New York. His mother, Marjorie, was a dance instructor, and his father, Anthony, a film director. He had two sisters, Penny and Ronny. Marshall attended De Witt Clinton High School followed by Northwestern University. He graduated in 1956 with a BA degree in journalism. He also contributed to the University’s Daily Northwestern newspaper as a sports writer.
Prior to acting and directing, Marshall was a comedic writer. He wrote jokes for the likes of Joey Bishop, Phil Foster and later for the Tonight Show with Jack Paar. Marshall moved to Hollywood in the early 1960s to work alongside director Jerry Belson. The two contributed to a number of television programs including The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Danny Thomas Show. They created the sitcom ‘Hey, Landlord’ which ran on NBC from 1966-67.
Marshall’s most successful show ‘Happy Days’ premiered on January 15, 1974 on ABC. The series ran for 10 years for a total of 255 episodes. He also created the series Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy and Makin’ It. Marshall’s feature film directorial debut ‘Young Doctors in Love’ was released in 1982. His notable films include Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts, The Princess Diaries with Anne Hathaway, Valentine’s Day with Jessica Alba, and more recently Mother’s Day with Jennifer Aniston. Marshall was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1997. His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983.
Garry Marshall died on July 19, 2016 at the age of 81. His death was attributed to complications from pneumonia following a stroke. Marshall was 5ft 10in tall and had a net worth of $50 million.
