Frank Vincent was an American actor and former musician. He starred as “Phil Leotardo” in the HBO drama series The Sopranos. His film credits include Goodfellas (1990), Raging Bull (1980) and Casino (1995). Frank Vincent Gattuso Jr. was born on August 4, 1937 in North Adams, Massachusetts. He grew up in the Greenville community of Jersey City, New Jersey. His father, Frank Sr., was an amateur actor, and his mother was Mary Ricci. He had three siblings, Nick, Jimmy and Fran. Vincent attended St. Paul’s Grammar School where he acted in school plays. He also played musical instruments such as the drums, trumpet and piano.
Vincent started out as a musician. He performed as a drummer with the band Frank Vincent and the Aristocats at various clubs throughout New York. His acting debut was the low-budget crime film, The Death Collector (1976). The film was directed by Ralph De Vito and also stars Joseph Cortese and Joe Pesci. His performance caught the attention of filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Vincent had a supporting role as “Salvy Batts” opposite Robert De Niro in Raging Bull (1980). He followed up with roles in Do the Right Thing (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991). Those two films were written, directed and produced by Spike Lee. Vincent was cast in gangster roles as “Billy Batts” in Goodfellas (1990), as “Frank Marino” in Casino (1995), and as “Robert DiBernardo” in Gotti (1996). His other films include Remedy (2005), This Thing of Ours (2003) and Chicago Overcoat (2009).
