Fats Domino was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. He was a Grammy Rock & Roll Hall of Famer with more than 110 million records sold. His discography include The Fat Man (1949), Ain’t That a Shame (1955), Blueberry Hill (1956) and I’m Walkin’ (1957). 35 of his records were ranked in the US Billboard Top 40. Domino was born Antoine Domino Jr. on February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His parents were Antoine Caliste Domino and Marie-Donatille Gros. He was 1 of 9 children born into a musical family. Domino spoke both Creole and English. He dropped out of high school to pursue music. He’s worked odd jobs like hauling ice and working in a factory.

CAREER
Domino was taught the piano by his brother-in-law Harrison Verrett. He started out performing locally before joining the New Orleans band ‘the Solid Senders’ alongside Billy Diamond. He was later discovered by music producer Dave Bartholomew. Domino’s debut single “The Fat Man” was released in 1949 by Imperial Records. It has since sold over 1 million copies. His debut studio album, Rock and Rollin’ with Fats Domino, was released in November 1955. The album peaked at #17 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. It was led by the hit single “Ain’t That a Shame” which peaked at #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been dubbed one of the 500 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Domino’s cover of “Blueberry Hill” was a major hit, selling more than 5 million copies between 1956 and 1957. He followed up with songs like “I’m Walkin'”, “Valley of Tears”, “It’s You I Love”, and “I Want to Walk You Home”. Domino released more than 50 albums throughout his career. He worked with labels like Imperial Records, ABC-Paramount, Sunset Records, and United Artists Records. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, into the American Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998, and into Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016. His film credits include Shake, Rattle & Rock (1056) with Touch Connors, The Girl Can’t Help It (1956) with Jayne Mansfield, and Jamboree (1957) with Dick Clark. He was the subject of the documentary film Fats Domino and the Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll (2016).
