Dustin Hoffman is an Oscar-winning American actor and film director. He won Academy Awards for Best Actor for the 1980s films, Kramer vs. Kramer (1980) and Rain Man (1989). His credits include The Graduate (1967), Wag the Dog (1997), Quartet (2011), and the HBO series Luck (2011-12). Dustin Lee Hoffman was born on August 8, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. He was named after actor Dustin Farnum. His parents were Lillian Gold (d. 1982) and Harry Hoffman (1987).. He has an older brother named Ronald. Hoffman attended Los Angeles High School followed by Santa Monica College. He dropped out in 1956 to pursue acting.

Hoffman initially wanted to become a jazz pianist. He began his acting career as a stage actor with the Pasadena Playhouse. During his tenure he met upcoming actor Gene Hackman. The two ended up moved to New York City in search of work. Hoffman made his film debut in Arthur Hiller’s black comedy, The Tiger Makes Out (1967).
