Dan Stevens is an English film, television and theater actor. He’s best known for the films Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Guest (2014) and the drama series Downton Abbey. Stevens was born Daniel Jonathan Stevens on October 10, 1982 in London, England. He was raised by adopted parents. Stevens attended Tonbridge School in Kent followed by Emmanuel College, Cambridge University. He majored in English literature. He also trained at the National Youth Theatre in London.
Stevens made his professional stage debut as “Orlando” in a 2004 production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. His performance earned him an Ian Charleson Award nomination. He was selected for the role by theater director Peter Hall. Stevens has since performed in such venues as the Theatre Royal in Bath, the Apollo Theatre in London and The Old Vic in London. His stage credits include You Never Can Tell (2005), Hay Fever (2006) and The Vortex (2008). He was cast as “Morris Townsend” in a 2012 Broadway production of ‘The Heiress’.
Stevens made his television debut in the miniseries Frankenstein (2004). He was cast as “Arthur Holmwood” in the television film, Dracula (2006). Other early television appearances include Agatha Christie’s Marple (2007) and Sense and Sensibility (2008). Stevens co-starred as “Matthew Crawley” in the ITV drama series Downton Abbey (2010-12). That role earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance in a drama series. He currently stars as “David Haller” in the FX series, Legion. The show premiered on February 8, 2017 and is based on the Marvel Comics.
Stevens starred as “The Beast” opposite Emma Watson in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (2017). The film was directed by Bill Condon and also stars Luke Evans and Kevin Kline. Prior to that, Stevens starred as “David Collins” in the horror-thriller, The Guest (2014). Other notable films include A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) with Liam Neeson, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014) with Ben Stiller. His upcoming projects include Marshall, and The Man Who Invented Christmas. In addition to films, Stevens has narrated several audiobooks including War Horse and Casino Royale. He served as a judge at the 2012 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
