Avicii was a Grammy-nominated Swedish DJ, musician and record producer. He specialized in EDM, progressive house, and electro house music. His discography include the albums, True (2013), and Stories (2015). He collaborated with David Guetta on the 2012 hit single “Sunshine”. Avicii was born Tim Bergling on September 8, 1989, in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother, Anki Liden, is an actress. He had three siblings, Anton, David and Linda. Avicii resided in Hollywood, California.

Avicii began his music career in his late teens. His music influences included Daft Punk, Eric Prydz, Axwell and Steve Angello. He started out writing/remixing songs and sharing them on the internet. Avicii’s early releases included “My Feelings”, “Bromance” and “Seek Bromance”. He co-produced the single “Sunshine” from David Guetta’s 5th album, Nothing but the Beat (2011). His first major hit “Levels” dropped in July 2011. It featured samples from “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” by Etta James. ‘Levels’ peaked at #1 in Sweden, and at #1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Avicii collaborated on the single “I Could Be the One” with Dutch DJ Nicky Romeo. It charted at #3 on the Swedish Singles chart, and was certified Gold in the US, the UK and Germany.

Avicii’s debut studio album, True, was released in September 2013 by PRMD Music and Island Records. It was led by the singles “Wake Me Up”, “You Make Me”, “Hey Brother”, “Addicted to You” and “Lay Me Down”. The album featured guest production from Arash Pournouri and Nile Rodgers. Avicii co-wrote and co-produced the single “A Sky Full of Stars” from Coldplay’s 6th album, Ghost Stories (2014). It sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. Avicii’s second album, Stories, arrived in October 2015. It produced 4 singles, including “Waiting for Love” and “For a Better Day”. The album incorporated EDM, dance-pop and house music. It featured Wyclef Jean, Matisyahu, and Zac Brown among others. In 2016, Avicii retired from live performance due to declining health. His latest project was the EP, Avici (01), released in August 2017. He was the subject of the documentary film, Avicii: True Stories (2017). The film was written and directed by Levan Tsikurishvili.

Avicii died on April 20, 2018, at the age of 28. His family confirmed on April 26 that he had committed suicide. The DJ was also battling acute pancreatitis back due to excessive alcohol intake. He is survived by his parents and three siblings. Avicii was 5ft 10in tall and he was of Swedish descent. He also went by the monikers “Tim Berg” and “Tom Hangs”. His personal net worth was estimated at $85 million prior to his death. He earned between $10 million and $20 million per year for much of his career. He’s also held endorsement deals with brands like Ralph Lauren.
